Q & A

Below, please find a list of frequently ask questions:

For my upcoming experiment at the ESRF, I may need to prepare samples on site, but did not request access to lab facilities on my proposal form.

Please state your needs concisely (see also above) and get in touch with lab staff via chemlab@esrf.fr.

How can I get access rights added to access the ESRF Chemistry Lab (at the Science Building)?

Please send a message to chemlab@esrf.fr and state clearly your needs. You will be contacted shortly.

Please return the duly filled in and signed User Dec Form (the form can be downloaded here) on time.

To access the lab premises, access rights have to be added to your badges. To attribute such rights, all persons participating in a given experiment have to present themselves at SB 107 (Léa Bourcet) or SB 110 (Harald Müller).

For my upcoming experiment at the ESRF, I need a number of gases and gas-mixtures. Who is going to take care of this?

Please check with your local contact how to proceed best. Please note that the ESRF Chemistry Lab provides only argon and nitrogen.

For my scheduled experiment at the ESRF, I need a number of chemicals. Who is going to order these?

Chemical products can be ordered through the ESRF Chemistry Lab. Requests must allow for a sufficient time to process the order and subsequent delivery. Last-minute requests (less than 48 working hours before starting date) are not acceptable and shall not be dealt with.

For my experiment at the ESRF, I need a glove-box.

Please state your needs concisely via chemlab@esrf.fr .

For all electrochemical experiments, there is a special glove-box located at the Electrochemical Lab at LOB 0-23. Please check with your local contact as to the access procedure.

Please note that we cannot handle any compounds with an appreciable vapour pressure in the glove-box.

My experiment at the ESRF involves the use of nanoparticles.

Please state your needs (nanoparticles confined/unconfined) concisely via chemlab@esrf.fr. Such experiments may require formal approval by Experimental Safety. We have a laminar-flow hood which is designed for working with nanoparticles.

For sample preparation, I need to use hydrofluoric acid (perchloric acid, fuming nitric, hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, aqua regia). Is this possible on site?

Yes, we have appropriate lab space for handling such substances. Please state your needs (quantities to be used) concisely via chemlab@esrf.fr .

Is there any glass-blower on site?

Unfortunately, there is neither a glass-blower on site nor in town.

It is possible to change the inert gas (Ar) in the Glove box to nitrogen or helium?

Changing the inert gas in the GB is not feasible.

Packing samples in and for the Glove Box.

Samples or solids packed in air or in air-filled containments are NOT acceptable. Please note that it is solely your responsibility to pack adequately all items you wish to introduce into the box. Packing must withstand pressure changes of ± 1000 mbar. Repacking onsite is not possible.

Is it to possible to ship my samples to the lab?

If you need to send your samples, please check with your local contact.
